Patty O'Rorke graduated at the top of his class at West Point a year before the war broke out. During the Battle of Gettysburg, he was killed while leading his regiment, who were driving the Confederate Army off a strategic position known as Little Round Top.
His New York Regiment decided to honour their fallen officer after the war by placing a monument on Little Round Top. The monument, which includes a bronze likeness of O'Rorke, is said to bring good luck to all who touch his nose. So the students and teachers couldn't resist. I, however, don't tend to believe in superstitions so I wouldn't touch a bronze nose, right?
It felt pretty smooth.
